When an ASSE 6030 is certifying a new medical vacuum / wagd combo pump system. Per NFPA 99 the 2012 Edition and the pump unit is a rotary oil vane type pump.

Does the following items need to be included in the certification report and installed on the medical vacuum pump package ?

    1) Written Confirmation from the manufacture that the system is constructed and suitable for a medical vacuum / wagd combo system.

    2) The Installation of an analyzer to monitor that the oxidizer for O2 & N2O are below 23.6 %

    This is a tricky questions.

Source Equipment Verification only requires that the source equipment be verified for proper function. Which would not specifically include the design requirements listed elsewhere in the code book.

With that being said, since you know of the potential damage that could be done in an oil lubricated vacuum pump that will be receiving oxidizers, it would be in the facilities best interest to require that the equipment manufacturer list that the vacuum pump is compatible for this use. The requirement for and oxygen and nitrous oxide monitor would only be needed if the manufacturer states that their system is not compatible for systems that will include the presence of oxidizers.

We typically include notes requesting that the facility receive confirmation from the equipment manufacturer regarding their compatibility with oxidizers. With additional notes regarding the code remedy for non-compatible oil lubricated systems requiring monitoring for oxygen and nitrous oxide to ensure that these levels are below 23.6 percent.

As verifiers we are required to follow the testing listed in 5.1.12, but we also have very specific knowledge of system design requirements, and the potential damage that can occur in improper design and installed systems.

    Yes and I Agree.

So, I Reviewed Again Section #5.1.12.3.14.5.

Under Our Verification Section On Medical-Surgical Vacuum Systems.

Its a very short one sentence statement.

    ( Proper Functioning )

But All ASSE 6030 Would Also Need to Included Testing And Verification Of

    The Requirement Accessories.

As Listed In Section # 5.1.12.3.14.

The latest vacuum fire in the exhaust filter chamber was in a very large medical center. One medical vacuum "packager" recently stated to a Design Engineering firm on the East Coast their oil lubricated rotary vane pumps are only a problem for WAGD if used in an Outpatient Surgery Center.

One month later (literally) I am responding to the vacuum pump fire of a medical surgical vacuum oil lubricated rotary vane pump in a very large medical center.

The vendor was pushing for the sale and convince the designer to change the pump from a claw oxygen assured to the oil lubricated rotary vane for the WAGD and Vacuum piping system.

The vendor got what they wanted and we will verify it functions properly to manufacturer's specifications, design engineers specification and is noncompliant to NFPA 99, 2018 requirements for the WAGD source equipment.

Just the facts and let someone else decide if they want to accept this system as installed.
